Life and Death is the seventh chapter of Dead Space: Extraction. The chapter takes place on the Ishimura in the Hydroponics Deck and is told through the eyes of Dr. Karen Howell, a botanist working on the Hydroponics Deck.
Description[]
Karen Howell must fight her way through the Hydroponics Deck to the apparent safety of escape on the ship's Shuttle Bay. There, she encounters Lexine Murdoch, who was thought to have perished in the sewers by her companions. Karen must protect herself and Lexine from the swarm of Necromorphs chasing them in order to reach a shuttle that will allow them to escape.
Plot Summary[]
Suffering from Marker-induced hallucinations, Dr. Karen Howell attempts to reach the tram station in order to get to the Ishimura’s shuttle bay. En route she finds Lexine, who has been separated from McNeill’s group, and tends to her injuries. Upon Lexine’s insistence, the two head back to the sewer tunnels to search for McNeill, Weller and Eckhardt. On their way there, Howell defeats a large, aggressive necromorph.
Eventually, all five survivors regroup near the tram station on the Hydroponics Deck. McNeill, Weller and Lexine leave to scout the route ahead, leaving Howell alone with Eckhardt. Howell recognizes Eckhardt as the Executive Director of CEC’s Colonial Mining Operations; Howell also reveals that she knows Eckhardt is a Unitologist, responsible for replacing several crewmembers of the Ishimura with fellow devotees. Just as the conversation becomes heated, the two are attacked by a necromorph tentacle. Using the opportunity to get rid of an inconvenience, Eckhardt flees the room, locking Howell inside and dooming her to a gruesome death.
