"I built your shit. It didn't work! You're not gonna hurt anyone else!"
—Jacob Temple to Challus Mercer.[1]

Jacob Temple was an engineer who worked aboard the USG Ishimura. He was mentioned as Acting Chief Engineer in various audio logs; his logs chronicled his journey throughout the disaster aboard the ship.

Biography[]

Background[]

Jacob Temple was an engineer employed by the Concordance Extraction Corporation to work on the USG Ishimura's Engineering Deck. Jacob had previously dated a man named David before dating Ishimura horticulturist Dr. Elizabeth Cross from the Hydroponics Deck.

Second Aegis VII Incident[]

During the planet-cracking of Aegis VII, the colony found a Red Marker on the planet. Upon extracting the Marker, the colony and the Ishimura were plagued with a Necromorph infestation. Jacob was forced to dismember friends and coworkers while leading his team to safety, becoming the Acting Chief Engineer after the death of the ship's Chief Engineer.

Jacob struggled to maintain the Ishimura as numerous systems were sabotaged by Dr. Terrence Kyne, such as turning off the engine and gravity centrifuge. Jacob and his team eventually fled to the Mining Deck where they tried to make a sanctuary for surviving crew members and create an SOS beacon to call for rescue. Some time later, Dr. Challus Mercer, a Unitologist, sent out a call for help which was heard by Jacob, tricking him into abandoning his post to rescue the doctor.

Death[]

"That lying fucker lured me off the Mining Deck to build something. To make his Marker start... converging? I don't know. Liz, if you find this, don't touch that Marker. If you see Mercer, run. I love you."
—Temple records a log to his girlfriend, Elizabeth Cross, after being captured by Mercer.[2]
Jacob "Based" Temple

Jacob confronts Mercer with his Force Gun.

Jacob was taken hostage by Mercer and was forced to assist the Unitologist's experiments with the Marker after the artifact was brought to the Crew Deck. In his efforts to fulfil the Marker's request that "the makers must be absorbed",[3] Mercer ordered Jacob to "build something" in order to bring about a Convergence Event.

While Jacob managed to convince Mercer that he needed his Force Gun for his work, the doctor forced him to remove several modifications that could make the tool deadly if used against him.[2] After the attempt to trigger Convergence failed, Jacob decided to confront Mercer head-on, shooting him with his Force Gun and injuring him, but was countered by a Stasis shot. After Mercer had a short conversation with engineer Isaac Clarke, he killed Jacob by shooting him in the head while still in stasis, prolonging his death.

Trivia[]

  • In the remake, Jacob Temple is voiced by and modeled after T. J. Ramini.
  • Jacob Temple's journey as it was experienced through his audio logs resembled Isaac Clarke's in a number of ways. He seems to travel roughly the same path as Isaac, often attempting to fix the very problems that Isaac eventually fixes and also seeking to reunite with his girlfriend, Elizabeth Cross.
  • In the remake, Jacob is implied to be bisexual. He mentions seeing "old boyfriends" transformed on the ship, and in his last message to Elizabeth Cross he talks about a man named David that he was presumably in love with before her.
  • Temple's quest through a ship infested with mutants from a murderous hivemind in search of an imperiled lover and escape is reminiscent of the journey of Thomas Suarez from System Shock 2.

"This is Temple. The bridge is fucked. I don't know what went on in there, but I'm not sticking around in case whatever did it comes back. I'm heading for Hydroponics, to find Elizabeth."
—Jacob, in the audio log Temple on the Bridge.[1]

Biography[]

Second Aegis VII Incident[]

During the early stages of the Necromorph outbreak, Jacob and his Engineering crew were trying to maintain the Ishimura's engine room.[2] However, as time passed by and the infection spread, the members of his crew started showing signs of dementia.[3] After realizing the danger, Jacob abandoned his position on the Engineering Deck and began searching for his girlfriend, Elizabeth Cross.[4][5] Jacob frequently left audio logs of his journey, which Isaac Clarke later found throughout the ship. He eventually reunited with Elizabeth and the two attempted to escape from the vessel together.[6]

Death[]

Their reunion was cut short when they were intercepted by Challus Mercer.[7] The two were gagged and Elizabeth was killed after Mercer rammed a metal spike into her head, a process that was used by the Unitologists in preparation of the Necromorph transformation. Temple was killed shortly afterward by the same method in front of Isaac, who could only stand by and watch.

Trivia[]

  • Temple is only seen alive in one chapter; all of the other "Encounters" consisted of collecting his audio logs.
  • Jacob can be seen in Dead Space 2 during the "Previously on Dead Space" montage.
  • Jacob Temple's journey as it was experienced through his audio logs resembled Isaac Clarke's in a number of ways. He seems to travel roughly the same path as Isaac, often attempting to fix the very problems that Isaac eventually fixes. He is also seeking his girlfriend named Elizabeth Cross and according to the audio logs, he reunited with her on the Mining Deck which was the same deck where Isaac sees Nicole again. In fact, it could be that Isaac is only about a chapter or two behind Jacob Temple's journey after the Necromorph infestation.
